Learning Piano Songs

!±8± Learning Piano Songs

There are many ways to start learning the piano, or indeed any musical instrument. Many traditional methods of music teaching involve long hours of boring and repetitive music theory with little in the way of excitement and inspiration. I remember learning scales and theory for ages, wondering when I would be advanced enough to start playing some of my favourite songs. Well the truth is that you can start playing your favourite songs right from the very beginning, learning as you go, allowing the music to teach you. This method of learning piano is so much more fun and in the end much more productive for the student, keeping them engaged and interested in the act of learning.

Most popular songs, and a lot of simple classical and jazz pieces, use very easy chord structures that not only teach you a lot about the piano but teach you about the nature of music as well. Simple chord sequences that follow basic scale patterns are the key structures to so many songs, and you can be playing them from the very beginning. Learning this way is fantastic, and you are much more likely to keep at your lessons if you are having fun from the start. By learning actual songs it is also much easier to learn to improvise and read music as well, as you already know the material and can match the notation with the music.

There are some great online music programs that teach you how to learn piano in this fashion, through fun and inspiration rather than through sheer repetition and memory. Say you have a favourite Beatles song, or a Madonna song that you absolutely love to bits - well, with this method of learning piano, you can learn to play piano and learn to play your favourites right from the very beginning. Sure - learning scales and chord patterns are important - but there is no reason why you can't learn them from the inside out, as a thorough understanding of any song can teach you a lot about the intrinsic nature of music itself.

While some people may be well suited to the traditional methods of repetitive learning, abstracted piano scales, exercises and routines - the rest of us could really benefit from this new approach to learning piano through learning the very songs that we love. Learning piano songs is a fun and efficient way to learn the instrument while developing a deep understanding of the nature of music and how it has been used in the past by our musical heroes.
